Facial recognition technologies have been installed at Shenyang Railway Station, with the aim of providing extra convenience to passengers, liaoning.nen.com.cn reported.

On March 16, an automatic check-in machine using facial recognition technologies commenced trial operations at the ticketing entrance of Shenyang Railway Station. It allows passengers to check their tickets by themselves before they pass through the gates. The whole process, which involves the scanning of passengers' train tickets, personal ID cards and faces, takes around four seconds per person.

Compared with the traditional manual service for checking-in, which takes five to six seconds, the automatic machine using facial recognition technologies not only saves time, but also improves the accuracy of facial recognition, which used to be affected by a passenger’s appearance with changes such as aging and weight gain, according to a director at Shenyang Railway Station.

Currently, only one automatic check-in machine is in operation, as part of a trial operation at the station. Another two will be established; one on the east square and one on the west square of the station in the near future.

Furthermore, all railway stations affiliated to Shenyang Railway Bureau will be equipped with this kind of automatic check-in machine, according to the local railway authorities.
