E-commerce boosts Shenyang consumer market

Shenyang in Liaoning province has maintained strong momentum in e-commerce during the past year, according to local statistics authorities.

The rapid development of e-commerce has created new consumer demand and triggered a new investment boom in Shenyang, resulting in the expansion of employment channels, along with the upgrading and transformation of industries.

The gross turnover of online wholesale, retail, accommodation and catering in Shenyang amounted to 14.19 billion yuan ($2.06 billion) in 2016, represents growth of 40.7 percent from the previous year.

The latest statistics from Shenyang statistics bureau, detailing the city's e-commerce, can be broken down into three categories.

First, online wholesale and retail dominate the e-commerce market of Shenyang city. In 2016, a total of 13 businesses undertaking wholesale and retail achieved turnover of 14.17 billion yuan, accounting for 99.9 percent of the gross e-commerce turnover of Shenyang during the past year.

Second, online retail in Shenyang maintained rapid growth, although the offline retail market shrunk in 2016. Online retail turnover largely boosted the whole retail market in Shenyang during the past year, with the market share of online business accounting for 39.4 percent of the retail market, representing growth of 28.2 percent compared with that in 2015.

Finally, four categories of goods enjoy the most popularity in the e-commerce market: household appliances, audio devices, daily necessities and communication devices. They respectively achieved turnover of 4.25 billion yuan, 3.98 billion yuan, 2.22 billion yuan and 2.19 billion yuan.
