Arts area in Baotou set to revive folk culture

Located in Baotou, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, Dongdashan Arts Area is the gathering venue for folk artists in the city.

The area boasts four themed zones which are the Contemporary Arts Museum, Folk Arts Museum, a research institute highlighting the influence of deer on Baotou’s culture (as Baotou is also known as Lucheng, literally a place with deer), and the artists’ studios.

A total of four folk artists –– Wang Hongchuan, Liu Zhanqiang, Wang Haiyan and GuoQipeng –– have set up studios in the area.

A total of 5 million yuan ($724,400) will be spent enhancing the area’s facilities, including roads and greenery, according to a document released by the people's government of Qingshan district in March 2016.

A folk artist shapes dough. Baotou dough modeling is a traditional folk art originating in Shanxi province. It uses polished glutinous rice, painted with different colors, and is modeled by hand as well as with some simple tools.
