It is recorded that the Bamboo Forest Temple has experienced its ups and downs since Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907).

The temple was rebuilt in Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) by Fa Hai and then became famous. It was extended in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) by Korean monk named Man Kong, after that, the temple became prosperous.

Later it was burned down in a fire. The present one is rebuilt at the old site, which is the major ancient architectural complex in the west valley of Mount Tai.

Climb to the west, one can enjoy Fan Cliff and Aolai Peak. And the Black Dragon Pool is right below the temple where one can appreciate waterfall in summer.
