The Sichuan Conservatory of Music's predecessor is the Sichuan Opera and Music Experimental School, whose history dates back to 1939. The school changed its name toSouthwestMusicalTechnicalSchoolin 1952, and has used its current name since 1959.

-- Establishment

Sitting on area that spans 1,000 mu, the conservatory has eight departments: composition, piano, instrument, vocal music, folk music, musicology, musical education and dance. It is divided into 14 professional education sections: an education center for adults, an attached middle school, an international performance academy, a fine art academy, theMianyangFineArtAcademyand a folk music educational center which offers over 80 majors. The conservatory has the right to confer a masters degree to students majoring in music and painting authorized by the academy degree committee of the State Council.

-- Major Achievements

In the past 20 years, the conservatory has garnered more than 400 prizes and awards in competitions both at home and abroad. It has also set up friendly relations with conservatories and art groups in over 30 countries and regions.
