The predecessor of Qingdao University of Science and Technology is the Shenyang Light Industry Senior Vocational School founded in 1950, which was moved to Qingdao in 1956. In 1958, Shandong Chemical Engineering University was established on such basis in the school, marking the beginning of the school's higher education. In 2001, the university was merged with Qingdao School of Fine Arts and it received its current name the next year.

Currently, the school has five campuses in Jinan, Qingdao, and Gaomi, a county-level city in Weifang, covering a total area of 920,000 square meters. The value of the university’s fixed assets totals 2.9 billion yuan ($420.32 million).

To date, the university has 76 majors for bachelor degrees, five postdoctoral research stations, five doctoral degree programs for first-rank disciplines, 22 master's degree programs for first-rank disciplines, and nine authorized master's degree specialties.

The three majors – chemistry, material science, and engineering science – entered the top 1 percent in the global rankings set by Essential Science Indicators, also known as ESI, an authoritative analysis and evaluation tool for measuring scientific research performance.

The university has been improving its scientific and technological innovation capacity since its establishment. It has won the National Science and Technology Progress Awards, the National Technology Invention Awards, and the DuPont Innovation Awards 15 times.

Eight national-level innovative platforms, three provincial-level collaborative innovation centers, as well as 35 provincial research centers for key disciplines and engineering technology and key laboratories have been built up to boost the university's scientific and technological innovation.

The university has also been expanding its international exchanges and cooperation in recent years. It has established long-term cooperative relationships with 110 renowned colleges and universities in 20 countries and regions.

By collaborating Paderborn University in Germany, the university built up the Sino-German Technical College and introduced the German dual education system, which combines apprenticeships in a company and education at a school in one course. It also founded an international institute of rubber in Thailand, its first overseas educational institution.
