How did ancient Chinese literati stay cool in muggy summer?
This Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) painting by Qian Gu (1508-79) shows two scholars enjoying a game of go in a waterside pavilion, shaded by pines, bamboo, and lush banana leaves. Created for the renowned scholar Wang Shizhen (1526-90), it beautifully captures the refined art of summer leisure. Collection: Liaoning Provincial Museum.
