If there’s one iconic destination for surfing in China, Riyue Bay in Wanning in the country’s Hainan province is undoubtedly among the top choices.

Known for its consistent waves throughout most of the year, it has become one of the best-known surfing hotspots.

On May 28, international journalists and social media influencers participating in the Nihao China: European Travel Media and Influencers' Hainan Tour visited Riyue Bay and experienced some great surfing.

At the bay, professional training zones, teaching areas and visitor experience sections coexist along the coastline. Some participants stood by the shore capturing the sea views on camera, some walked barefoot along the beach, while others held their surfboards and waited for the next wave.

At China Tourism Group’s Riyue Bay Surf Resort, most guests chose to enter the water and try surfing.

For many, it was their first encounter with the sport. Before heading into the sea, they repeatedly practiced movements on training equipment under their instructor’s close guidance.

Irish content creator Tariq Sawyer successfully completed his first stand-up ride after the lesson. “This is my first time surfing. At first it was challenging, then it became relaxing,” he said.

“Definitely, I will recommend it to my family. The artificial surfing area is perfect for learning. You can control the environment and the waves. It’s safe,” he added.

Here, surfing isn’t just an extreme sport for professionals. In fact, whether strolling along the beach, enjoying the ocean view or taking a first surfing lesson, everyone can find their own way to engage with the sea.

As more surfing schools, competitions and coastal resort projects continue to develop, this ocean-centered lifestyle is also fast becoming a new calling card for Wanning.
