Shanghai has introduced a system that allows businesses to obtain "ID cards" for their data products through intellectual property registration.

This system helps you:

  • Protect your data assets with formal recognition

  • Trade and license data products more easily

  • Unlock value through financing, transactions, and services

It is particularly relevant for companies working with:

  • Artificial intelligence (AI)

  • Data analytics

  • Digital platforms and algorithms

What types of data products can be registered

You can apply for IP registration if your data product falls into one of the following categories:

  • Data processing collections

  • Data processing products

  • Data technical algorithms (e.g. AI models)

Who can apply

This service is suitable for:

  • Tech companies and AI developers

  • Data service providers

  • Enterprises with proprietary datasets or algorithms

  • Businesses seeking to commercialize data assets

How to apply

The process is online and free of charge.

Step 1: Log in

Step 2: Submit materials

Prepare and upload the following documents:

  • Registration application form

  • Summary of the data product

  • Explanation of substantive processing and innovation

  • Description of application scenarios

Step 3: Review process

  • Your application will need to be approved before entering a 15-day public announcement period.

Step 4: Final approval

  • If no objections are raised, you will receive a registration certificate.

  • The certificate will be recorded on the blockchain at the Shanghai Digital Preservation Center's IP Sub-center for secure preservation.

Validity period

  • The registration certificate is valid for three years.

What you can do after registration

Once your data product is registered, you can:

  • Trade it on platforms such as the Shanghai Data Exchange

  • License it to other businesses

  • Use it as collateral for financing

  • Generate revenue through data services
