A first for the Palace Museum: Opening its hidden ice cellar to the public

Tucked away in the western section of the Forbidden City, the 18th-century ice cellar — once used to store ice for the imperial household — opened to the public in early 2017. This historical space was transformed into a welcoming visitor area — featuring a cozy café, a stylish restaurant and a small bookshop perfect for quiet reading.

Step outside to an open-air corridor furnished with tables, chairs and parasols beneath the ancient red walls — an inviting spot to pause and enjoy the palace's rare tranquillity.
