This baluster unearthed from Mausoleum No 6 of the Xixia Imperial Tombs testifies to the extraordinary skill of Western Xia Dynasty (1038-1227) artisans.

Carved from white sandstone, the baluster is wrapped on three sides with vivid dragon motifs winding around swirling clouds, with one side left plain. The rectangular mortise holes at the top and bottom allow it to connect with horizontal railings. Beautiful and practical, this piece is now housed in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region Museum.
