Unveiling Dawenkou National Archaeological Site Park: A Journey of 6,000 years

The Dawenkou National Archaeological Site Park was introduced during the main city event for the 2025 Cultural and Natural Heritage Day in Shandong province, held in Tai'an on June 16.

Excavations of the Dawenkou culture in Shandong began in 1959, prompted by the construction of the Jinpu Railway, and continued in 1974 and 1978, extending to today. This area still offers many intriguing discoveries.

Visiting this site today evokes a sense of pride and appreciation. A modern archaeological site park is taking shape in Tai'an, combining elements of tourism, historical culture, and archaeological practice.

Situated on both banks of the Dawen River at the southern foot of Taishan Mountain in Tai'an city, the Dawenkou site spans 38.9 hectares, with 22.3 hectares on the north bank and 16.6 hectares on the south bank. It is the namesake site of the Dawenkou culture, which is vital for studying the origins of Chinese civilization, bridging the Beixin and Longshan cultures.

Visitors can engage in activities like cycling and hiking, explore the land once inhabited by Dawenkou ancestors, and learn about the burial customs, family relationships, and social structure of that era. They can also visit ancient kiln sites and admire the craftsmanship of white, red, and black pottery.
