As the main feature of the Zhongshan Warship Memorial Park within the tourist area, the Zhongshan Warship Museum opened to the public in October 2011. The current collection primarily consists of artifacts salvaged from the warship Zhongshan and items acquired through public donations. At present, the museum houses over 6,500 artifacts (stand-alone or in sets), including more than 2,953 classified as valuable, covering a wide range of areas such as history, politics, military affairs, and economics.

The warship was originally named Yongfeng but was later renamed Zhongshan in honor of Sun Yat-sen (1866-1925), whose name is pronounced “zhong shan” in Mandarin. Today, it is remembered as a legendary vessel in modern Chinese history.

The ship was ordered by the Qing government from Japan in 1910 and was completed and launched in 1912. In January 1913, it joined the First Fleet of the Beiyang Navy. In June 1922, during the "Guangzhou Crisis", Sun Yat-sen boarded the ship and directed a rebellion suppression campaign that lasted over 50 days. After his death in March 1925, the Yongfeng was renamed Zhongshan to commemorate him.

Since joining the Chinese navy, the Zhongshan played a role in five major historical events. In October 1938, during the Battle of Wuhan in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45), the ship was bombed and sunk by Japanese aircraft in the Yangtze River near Jinkou. The Zhongshan Warship stands as an important historical witness in China’s modern history, especially in the history of the National Revolutionary Movement.

In January 1997, the Zhongshan was fully salvaged from the bottom of the Yangtze River. After being meticulously restored to its original appearance, it was successfully relocated from Wuchang (the restoration site) to Jinkou between May 15 and 25, 2008. It is now on display in the exhibition hall of the Zhongshan Warship Museum.
