China’s first large-scale historical dance drama set in natural scenery, The Song of Everlasting Sorrow, brings to life a legendary love story in four acts: Mutual Devotion, Favored Beauty, Tragic Parting and Reunion in the Afterlife. With a cast of 700 performers, the production is based on the poem of the same name by the Tang Dynasty (618-907) poet Bai Juyi (772-846). The poem vividly depicts the magnificent scenery of the high Tang Dynasty and the love legend between Emperor Xuanzong (r. 712-756) and his consort Yang Yuhuan (719-756).

This visually stunning performance uses Lishan Mountain as its backdrop and the Jiulong Lake at the Huaqing Palace as its stage. Elements such as pavilions, corridors, willows, and water features merge seamlessly with cutting-edge technology. Audiences are transported into a dreamlike realm with dazzling starry skies, cascading mist, fiery lake scenes, and a vast underwater stage with LED projections. This production blends history and modernity, nature and culture, the mortal world and the celestial, creating an unforgettable artistic spectacle.
