The Echoes of Dunhuang is the world's first immersive cave-style theater experience. Rooted in Dunhuang culture, the production brings to life the ancient melodies of Dunhuang by deeply interpreting Mogao Cave murals and historical texts from its Library Cave. Utilizing advanced technologies such as holographic projection and 3D aerial rigging, it presents the touching story of Bai, a young boy from the Western Regions, on his artistic journey.

The performance features traditional Chinese instruments, including the five-string pipa, panpipes, and ruan zither, alongside restored Dunhuang instruments. Audiences will be mesmerized by dances like the Huxuan Dance, Waist Drum and Pipa Dance, and Kalavinka Dance, accompanied by music inspired by Dunhuang’s ancient scores and melodies of the Western Regions, recreating the vibrant musical and dance scenes depicted in the murals. This immersive experience offers a breathtaking spectacle that showcases the enduring charm of Dunhuang’s musical heritage.

Breaking traditional theater constraints, The Echoes of Dunhuang introduces a groundbreaking "living" Cave 736, inspired by the 735 existing Mogao Caves. The design faithfully replicates elements such as the Library Cave, Buddhist shrines, lotus platforms, and painted ceilings. By bringing the mural figures to life, it creates an interactive, explorable, and multi-sensory cave theater.

Throughout the performance, the audience follows the protagonist Bai’s journey—walking, standing, and sitting—to explore the different spaces of the theater. As the story unfolds, viewers gradually delve deeper into the rich artistic world of Dunhuang, experiencing its poetry, dance, music, and visual splendor at zero distance.
