Round carved stone male pedestal from Xixia Imperial Tombs

With bulging eyes, fierce fangs, protruding cheekbones and thick eyebrows, this stone man sculpture from the Western Xia Dynasty (1038-1227) is in a strained crouching posture, supporting a stele pavilion at Mausoleum No 6 of the Xixia Imperial Tombs in Yinchuan. It is the only pedestal in the tomb area engraved with Western Xia script – 15 characters on the top. There are also six Chinese characters on the back.
Exaggerated in form and powerful in spirit, this sculpture showcases the bold and unique style of the Western Xia stone art. Collection: Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region Museum.
