On Jan 25, 1941, Japanese invading troops in China surrounded Panjiayu village and carried out a horrific massacre against unarmed villagers, resulting in the deaths of 1,230 Chinese civilians. This atrocity, known as the "Panjiayu Massacre", shocked both China and the world.
To commemorate the victims of the massacre, the Panjiayu Massacre Memorial Hall was constructed in 1999.
At the Panjiayu Massacre Memorial Hall, a sweeping staircase draws visitors upward into a courtyard enclosed by towering stone walls. The confined space creates a deliberate shift—both physical and emotional—preparing visitors for reflection as they enter the memorial site.
As they climb the stairs, a bilingual memorial plaque (in Chinese and English) marks the entrance, providing historical context—the date, events, and purpose of the memorial. The building itself is a two-story structure in muted gray-white tones, designed with solemn simplicity to reflect the gravity of its history.
The courtyard is paved with scattered, explosion-patterned cobblestones, symbolizing the Japanese invasion and the massacre of innocent civilians. The withered tree in the courtyard further accentuates the theme, intensifying the oppressive and heavy atmosphere of the space.
