Bird photographer Pei Yulin recently helped reverse logging plans for a forest in Yuhu district, Xiangtan, Hunan province, after discovering cattle egrets breeding in the area. The site faced destruction in March when farmers began cutting trees to restore farmland.

Pei alerted environmental volunteers, who contacted local political adviser Hu Tao. Investigations revealed the forest, though originally farmland, had become a vital habitat during decades of growth.

On March 26, Xiangtan's forestry bureau urged logging delays to protect the nesting birds. After witnessing massive flocks returning at dusk, Hu advocated permanent preservation. On April 7 — during Hunan's "Bird Loving Week" — authorities decided to protect the forest permanently.

Pei expressed relief, noting egrets need over 70 days to raise offspring. Volunteers now observe the area to preserve harmony between humans and the birds.
