Commonly pictured in ancient Dunhuang murals, pipa dance is a stunning fusion of music and movement. Originating from Xiyu, or the western regions, and flourishing in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), dancers perform while playing the pipa with iconic, contortionist poses like the famous “playing the pipa behind the back”.
