This black-lacquered wooden dou vessel from the Warring States Period (475-221 BC) is decorated with red, ochre and yellow floral motifs, featuring three parts: a plate for the sake of holding food, a base and a bottom.
The plate is made of 16 petal-shaped segments, while the base is sculpted with a dragon and a snake intertwined in a graceful and dynamic pose.
Unearthed from the No 1 Jiuliandun tomb in Zaoyang, Hubei, this piece is a rare gem of Chu State lacquerware and is now housed at Hubei Provincial Museum.
