Today marks the start of Major Cold (dà hán, Chinese: 大寒), the last of China's 24 annual solar terms. As winter reaches its peak and the world chills, resilient plum blossoms emerge, defying the frost to bloom.
This strength and elegance are beautifully captured in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) blue-glazed cup with gold plum blossom motifs, a rare masterpiece of the time. A gold branch of plum blossoms shimmers against the rich blue glaze, showcasing intricate artistry.
Unearthed in 1964 from a primary school in Baoding, this treasured cup is now housed at Hebei Museum.
