Happy Laba Festival! Did you know that drinking Laba congee is a cherished tradition in many parts of China at this time of year? This stunning bronze li, a vessel from the Shang Dynasty (c.16th century-11th century BC), was once used by ancient people for cooking congee.
It is a marvel of craftsmanship, as intricate motifs cover its surface and two "standing ears" grace its upper edge. Three hollow conical legs, adorned with beast mask motifs, ingeniously increase heating efficiency, making it perfect for simmering soups or porridge.
Unearthed in the 1940s, the bronze li is now housed in Anhui Museum.
