With a size similar to a small paperweight, this stunning bronze base from the Warring States Period (475-221 BC) features intricate design and craftsmanship.

Composed of three parts – pillar socket, main body and support foot – this piece is adorned with six finely engraved phoenix motifs on all four sides of the main body, originally inlaid with turquoise (now detached). The body’s interior is filled with lead, giving the base exceptional stability. The four corners have kneeling figurines as supports, each decorated with square-spiral patterns.

Housed by Zhejiang Provincial Museum, this bronze base might be a component of an ancient musical instrument.
