German premium carmaker Audi released a guidebook on Tuesday on ancient trees in Beijing, as part of its efforts to protect urban biodiversity and contribute to a sustainable future.

The book, titled Beijing Biodiverse City Ancient Tree Guidebook, was compiled together with the Beijing Afforestation Foundation and the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.

Miriam Mayer-Ebert, Audi China's executive vice-president of operation and transformation, said: "This guidebook is designed for Beijing's urban residents, aiming to enhance people's understanding of ancient trees and guide readers towards a more scientific approach to viewing and protecting these natural treasures."

The book is part of the result of the Audi China Biodiverse City Initiative, which focuses on urban biodiversity and the protection of migratory birds as well as ancient trees in Beijing.

"Our 'Audi China Biodiverse City Initiative' inspires people to protect biodiversity and build a green, beautiful, and livable city," said Johannes Roscheck, president of Audi China.

"At Audi China, we are committed to fulfilling our pledge to preserve biodiversity, recognizing it as an essential measure in taking action for a sustainable future," he said.

Biodiversity in huge cities like Beijing is essential for sustainable human development.

Ancient trees, as an important component of the terrestrial ecosystem, play an irreplaceable role in enhancing biodiversity and mitigating climate change, said the company.

Initiated in 2023, the Audi China Biodiverse City Initiative began with the release of the Beijing Biodiverse City Birdwatching Guidebook. It expanded its focus in 2024 to include the protection of urban ancient trees.
