Hubei is the region in China where many of the most consequential events of the Three Kingdoms period (220-280) took place. The region is both the cradle and the grave of the Three Kingdoms dynasty.
Hubei served as the grand stage for the activities of notable figures such as Cao Cao, Sun Quan, Liu Bei, Zhuge Liang, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun and Zhou Yu, all of whom left their mark on Chinese history. Hubei also served as the main battleground for the wars of the Three Kingdoms, with two of the three most famous battles in the history of the Kingdoms – the Battle of Red Cliffs 赤壁之战 and the Battle of Yiling 夷陵之战 – occurring here. Stories like "Liu Bei Borrowing Jingzhou" 刘备借荆州, "The Careless Loss of Jingzhou" 大意失荆州 and "The Longzhong Plan" 隆中对, which are set in Hubei, have been passed down from one generation to the next.
