Painting scroll of wisteria and red goldfish, ink and color, Xugu, Qing Dynasty, from the collection of the Hebei Museum [Photo/Official WeChat account of the Hebei Museum]

In this painting scroll, lush wisteria blooms beautifully, while two red goldfish swim leisurely in the water below. In Chinese language, wisteria and goldfish form a pun, which can be interpreted as a prominent honor in imperial China granted to officialdom. The two elements symbolize the gold seal adorned with a purple ribbon, and a vivid depiction conveying wishes for great success, high office and abundant rewards.

Created by Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) monk artist Xugu (1823-96), this painting is now housed at the Hebei Museum.
