A law mandating the construction of barrier-free environments was passed by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress at the closing ceremony of its latest session on Wednesday.

The law lays out plans for the development of barrier-free facilities and the offering of barrier-free services. It also stipulates the government's supervisory role and the legal liabilities that could be incurred by those violating the law, which will take effect on Sept 1.

The legislation aims to provide such facilities and services to the disabled and the elderly, in particular. It will help ensure the rights of these groups while also promoting social harmony and comprehensive development.

The law is a necessary response to China's aging problem and an important move to ensure respect for and the protection of human rights, according to a report by the Xinhua News Agency on Wednesday.
