This lifelike crab is an ink paste box, skillfully crafted from a natural wood root with minimal carving. With discernable mouth and eyes, the crab has a rough back and a smooth abdomen. Its legs rest upon a semi-circular wooden branch.
The crab’s upper shell serves as the box’s lid and can be lifted to show the gold-lacquered interior. This ingenious Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) artifact, currently housed in the Palace Museum, is a fascinating example of ancient literati’s utensils.
