Water-splashing Festival, originated in India, was once a religious ritual of Brahmanism, and was later adopted by Buddhism. It was introduced to the Dai ethnic area of Yunnan, China, from Myanmar around the end of the 13th century to the beginning of the 14th century.

Generally held around 10 days before or after Qingming Festival, it is a grand festival of the Dai people. In addition to water splashing, festival activities also include dragon boat racing, bathing Buddha statues, reciting scriptures, peacock dancing, and white elephant performances.
