The State Grid Corp of China, the world's largest utility that shoulders the dual task of safeguarding the country's energy security as well as its economic lifeline, has tried to bolster electric power security from the very start.

As primary and secondary schools across China open their gates for the spring semester, following this year's Spring Festival holiday falling between Feb 10 and 17, the State Grid sent its staffers to visit the campuses, helping enhance children's awareness of power safety and self-protection ability.

In the prefecture-level city of Suqian in East China's Jiangsu province, the local branch of the State Grid sent its volunteers to visit the Chengxiang Primary School, giving students a first lesson on safe electricity use.

Administering three counties of Shuyang, Siyang and Sihong, as well as Suyu and Sucheng districts; Suqian has 67 townships and 28 urban sub-district offices with a total population of 5.85 million by the end of 2023.

Speaking to grade four students at Chengxiang Primary School, Wang Jianguo, a young volunteer from State Grid Suqian Power Supply Co, tried to offer a science lesson to them, asking them: "Do you know what the precautions are for using electricity safely in the classroom?"

"I know, Sir," some pupils raised their hands to answer the question, as the students listened with interest to the electrical safety lecture.

During the lecture, the State Grid staffer introduced power safety knowledge and correct practices in classrooms to students by basing on their daily life. The students discussed happily on it.

Through videos, PPT, quick queries, and quick answers based on real-life cases, the students were told of ways to improve their awareness of the safe use of electricity and the ability to avoid risks related to the use of electricity, said Guo Panpan, Wang's colleague.

"From today's class on electric power safety, I learned not to spray water or alcohol on switches, sockets and electric appliances. I think this class is very helpful for me," said Guo Xiao, a fourth grader, following the lecture.

After class, the students also shared their respective experiences and said they would apply the new knowledge in real life, start from themselves, and call on their family members and friends around them to use electricity safely and scientifically, and help save electricity, Guo Panpan said.

To boost the work, the State Grid Suqian Power Supply Co will actively play the role of its young volunteers, by touring more schools to teach students the common sense of safe electricity use and popularizing power science and technology knowledge, so as to help create a good power supply environment, she said.
