Joyous ode graces Beijing stage

The National Ballet of China premiered its latest production, Ode to Joy, at Beijing's Tianqiao Theater on Nov 17, with shows running till Nov 19.

Under the baton of Zhang Yi, the symphony orchestra of the National Ballet of China performed Symphony No 9 in D Minor, Op 125, one of the most remarkable compositions by Ludwig van Beethoven and the subject of the new production, opening the sixth China International Ballet Season.

Some 200 musicians, the chorus of the China National Symphony Orchestra and vocalists performed as part of the new production, which also marks the 70th anniversary of the Tianqiao Theater.

Over the next two months, 20 performances will be staged featuring international ballet companies, including the Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg, and the Stuttgart Ballet. The National Ballet's current season runs until Jan 5.
