The imperial court life of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) was highly refined, as evidenced by this intricately crafted red sandalwood box, used for containing food.
The shapes of the box and its lid resemble a begonia flower. Various techniques such as gold and silver inlay, mosaic assemblies are used. Yellow and white mother-of-pearl and an assortment of gemstones adorn the box in an exceptionally exquisite and luxurious manner. The patterns on the lid depict a scene of “Eight Immortals Offering Birthday Greetings”. Dragon, cloud and fiery pearl patterns also decorate the exterior of the box.
The box is in the permanent collection of the Palace Museum.
