Southern Dynasty tomb bricks depict aristocrats’ outing

Check out this set of pictorial bricks from the Southern Dynasty (420-589). Delicate lines and low relief portray three scenes of an aristocratic outing. Both the aristocrats and their attendants have distinct features, with vivid facial expressions and diverse clothing and hairstyles. The depiction of details such as a horse, ox cart, parasol, circular fan and willow tree is realistic.
Unearthed from a tomb in Yuhuatai district, Nanjing, the three pictorial bricks provide a glimpse of the aristocratic lifestyles and painting style of that era. They are in the permanent collection of the Nanjing Municipal Museum.
