Here is a precious silver pot adorned with exquisite gilt patterns of parrots and flowers and a moveable handle. According to the Chinese characters written on the inner side of its inverted bowl-shaped lid, the pot is used for storing materials used in making elixirs.

Dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the pot, with its round, large belly and two symmetrical gourd-shaped ears, is made using various techniques, showcasing the artistic imagination and creativity of the period.

Unearthed from Hejiacun village in Xi’an, Shaanxi province, in 1970, the pot is in the permanent collection of the Shaanxi History Museum.
