This shallow lacquer box has a thick and lustrous red coating. It is adorned with meticulously carved hibiscus flowers. The inscription on its base reads “made in the Yongle reign (1403-24) of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)”.
Excavated from the Juxing Pagoda in Nanxun, Huzhou, Zhejiang province, in 1974, the box is one of a few surviving red lacquerware from the Yongle period, providing insight into the exceptional carving craftsmanship of that era.
Kept by the Huzhou Museum, the box has recently been listed as one of the top 100 museum treasures in Zhejiang.
