The Tangchaodun ancient city site in Qitai county, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, was an important political-military establishment and transport hub located at the east of the new north route of the Silk Road.

From 2018 to 2022, archaeologists have not only figured out the site’s layout and history, but also excavated a courtyard site surrounded by walls, two temple sites and a Roman-style bathhouse.

The findings provide solid clues for the formation and development of a multi-ethnic unity system in Xinjiang, as well as the exchanges of multiple ethnicities, religions and cultures from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) to the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368).
