The Erlitou site in Yanshi, Luoyang, Henan province, covering an area of three million square meters, is confirmed to be the earliest large-scale city with clear planning in the Bronze Age.
In the most recent archaeological excavation since 2019, remains of walls and main roads outside the palace and workshop zones were discovered, revealing the crisscrossing road network layout of the site. Such a rigidly-designed urban layout provided important foundations for national systems and civilizations in later periods.
