On an octagonal base, a white-glazed hare is seated on its haunches. Its brown eyes stare forward and its two ears are laid back. This Tang Dynasty (618-907) hare figure is likely to be a Gongyi ware from Henan province, judging from similar broken pieces unearthed from the kiln.
White hares were endowed with an auspicious meaning and associated with filial conducts in ancient China. This adorable white hare figure is part of the permanent collection of the Shanghai Museum.
