A paperweight is a utensil used to fix paper in place while being written on. This green jade paperweight, dating back to the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), is carved into the shape of a crouching hare. Its front paws tuck under its chest and its ears gather on its back. Short and neat incised lines in the belly and legs indicate the hare’s fur. Two round eyes stare at the front.

Unearthed from the tomb of Shi Shengzu (1191-1274) and his second wife in 1974, the jade paperweight is part of the permanent collection of the Shanghai Museum.
