According to traditional Chinese culture, the twelve zodiac animals correspond to twelve deities who guard their respective terrestrial branches. This bright and creamy jade hare deity, dating back to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), has a sharp mouth, round eyes and erect ears beautifully sculptured using expert carving techniques. Wearing a Chinese robe with wide sleeves and sitting in a half lotus pose, the deity also holds a folding fan in its right hand.
It is one of twelve seated jade deity sculptures collected by the Shanghai Museum.
