As the holiday season approaches, medical experts in Shanghai remind people to wear masks and wash hands frequently as COVID-19 continues to prevail across the nation.

"There are quite a few chances for people to get infected (by the virus) in public places, so we advise not to take off masks during conversations and remain protected while dining out," said Jia Weiping, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, during an online interview with Shanghai media on Friday.

According to Jia, this winter may be the coldest one in decades, so senior people are advised to not visit public venues unless it is necessary. And if they go out, do not forget to keep themselves warm by wearing hats and scarves.

In addition to that, the elderly should drink warm water, keep a regular pace of life and remain calm, Jia added. "People with underlying health conditions such as diabetes and hypertension should not worry too much about their health as long as their conditions are stable and under control," she said.

"Lead a normal and regular life, and at the same time drink enough warm water. These practices will ultimately help us to boost our immunity," said Wu Huanyu, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control & Prevention.

"Immunity is the best medication for each of us," said Wu.
