Police resolved about 640,000 criminal cases and detained 1.4 million suspects during a 100-day nationwide operation to crack down on crimes and improve public security, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

Law enforcement officials also rectified security problems at about 7,440 places during the operation, which was launched on June 25. They also paid close attention to protecting the legitimate rights and interests of vulnerable groups such as women, minors, seniors and people with disabilities.

Qiu Baoli, head of the ministry's public security administration bureau, said the result of a poll conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics showed that 97.72 percent of participants were satisfied with the operation.

In another survey carried out by a third-party institute on the effectiveness of the operation, about 90 percent of participants said they went out alone at night without worrying about their safety, said the ministry.

Public security authorities at different levels have coordinated resources and forces to promote the crackdown and rectification, he said.

"Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, public security departments have accelerated the development of a public security prevention and control system and have paid close attention to all kinds of prominent illegal activities," Qiu said.

The number of filed criminal cases has been declining over the years. Last year, there were nearly 30 percent fewer filings than in 2015, according to statistics from the ministry.

Furthermore, the number of filings in the first eight months of this year dropped 13.1 percent compared with those during the same period last year, the statistics show.

The number of cases involving eight major crimes — murder, assault, rape, robbery, arson, explosion, kidnapping and hijacking — have been on the decline for a long time. The total number of such cases from January to August this year fell 7.8 percent year-on-year. People's sense of security rose from 87.55 percent in 2012 to 98.62 percent in 2021, the ministry said.

"Public security departments will focus on consistently enhancing people's sense of gain, happiness and security, further improve their ability to safeguard social security and strive to create a higher level of safety in China," Qiu said.
