Compared with ordinary housing, these public rental ones are offered by the government and are cheaper. For example, the rent for a 55-square-meter apartment is 1,300 yuan ($205) a month, while the going rate in the market is 3,000 yuan.

Because of the proximity, many of the island's residents study or work in Fuzhou. According to the city's housing security plan for Taiwan residents, those wanting to rent a public house can apply for it in their districts. Another 1,000 apartments will be made available to them in the future.
