The curtain went up on Dec 21 for the 16th Changchun Film Festival, which opened in Changchun – capital city of Northeast China's Jilin province – a cultural extravaganza that is offering five days packed with films and activities, according to local media reports.

Changchun is widely regarded as being one of the cradles of China's film industry.

Initiated in 1992, the Changchun Film Festival is China's first film festival to be named after a city.

The most prestigious award at the Changchun Film Festival is the Golden Deer Award, which has 10 categories – including Best Film, Jury Award, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Screenplay.
