Great Wall Motors said on Thursday that it is planning to produce its chassis-by-wire in 2023, which is expected to facilitate high-level autonomous driving technology.

Conventional chassis currently used in vehicles are mechanically controlled, so they need drivers to sit in the driving seat to steer the driving wheel or put the foot on the accelerator or the brake.

The chassis-by-wire is controlled by electric signals through cables, so it enables engineers to remove the pedals and steering wheels, thus paving the way for autonomous driving.

Critical elements of the chassis-by-wire are throttle-by-wire, gear-shift-by-wire, suspension-by-wire, steering-by-wire and brake-by-wire.

Great Wall Motors said its steering-by-wire is capable of Level 4 autonomous driving, which makes it the first carmaker in the country to own the technology.
