Ouyue Music, or bowl music, is played through the striking of ceramic wares. Producing clear and charming sounds, the Yue Kiln celadon from today’s Zhejiang province was one of its quintessential instruments.
The musical art was popular among refined scholars during the mid and late Tang Dynasty (618-907), but declined in popularity the following millennium.

Today, this old form of performance has been revived by the Cixi Ouyue Musical Troupe, established in 2009. It will bring some of its best works to the stage of the Shanghai Oriental Art Center on Oct 7. Let’s enjoy this classic art!
