Opened to the public in 2018 and covering 35,000 square meters, the China-Singapore Friendship Library in North China’s Tianjin was designed by the German design company gmp• Architekten von Gerkan. It boasts 35,000 books and can receive 5,000 visitors every day.
Why it’s special
Of the many reading rooms in the China-Singapore Friendship Library, there are two with Singaporean characteristics, making it possible for visitors to experience the advanced interior design concept and the distinctive cultural atmosphere of the maritime southeastern Asian country. One holds a collection of Singapore-themed books and imported books. The other is dedicated to disseminating ecological knowledge to children. The reading room is designed with an ocean-styled interior to hold its 23,000 books and has a reading area in the shape of a turtle.
In addition, in the China-Singapore Friendship Library, readers can communicate with an AI robot that can help to search, borrow, and return books. The library also uses a big data platform to recommend books to readers based on their reading habits.
