South Korean carmaker Hyundai is showing the electric IONIQ5 SUV at the Shanghai auto show, as a sign of its competitive edge in the NEV segment.

Hyundai said it will later introduce the model into China, where the carmaker is reviving its fortunes as a mainstream international brand. It is the first model built based on Hyundai’s E-GMP platform.

The carmaker’s joint venture, Beijing Hyundai, has launched several electric cars into the market, including the Mistra, the Encino and the La Festa.

Besides electric cars, the carmaker is presenting a full lineup of gasoline vehicles, ranging from the SUVs to the sedans.

One major highlight is the Tucson L SUV. Featuring the Sensuous Sportiness design language, it boasts the CVVD engine as well as Baidu’s onboard connectivity system.

In terms of sedans, the seventh-generation Elantra is attracting widespread attention at the booth.

It is built on the i-GMP platform and features the Smartstream powertrain as well as the safety system that incorporates up to 23 driving-asset functions.

The iX35 SUV as well as the Mistra and the Sonata sedans are also major heavyweight products at the Hyundai booth.

The carmaker said it will launch its first ever MPV in China in the second half of the year.
