The 35 square kilometer Mount Yun Scenic Area stands at the confluence of the Lyuliang Mountain and the Fen-Wei Graben System. Its highest peak, the Jade Emperor Peak, is 1,629 meters above sea level. Mount Yun is rich in natural resources, cultural landscapes, and cultural heritages. It is a comprehensive tourist resort in southern Shanxi province that integrates tourism, leisure, entertainment, vacations, health, folk experience, and cultural exchanges.
Mount Yun is home to 11 intact thousand-year-old ancient villages, among which is Talpo, a village with a long history of more than 2,500 years featuring yaodong cave dwellings that are rarely seen in the southern part of Shanxi. Talpo village got its name because Laozi, the ancient philosopher of Chinese Taoism, once stayed there during his journey around China; and it has therefore been included on the Chinese Traditional Village Protection List. During the Zhonghe Festival which has been a national intangible cultural heritage in the village since the Tang Dynasty (618-907), many local residents go to Mount Yun to worship, seeking a lucky new year.
With green peaks and beautiful natural scenery, Mount Yun enjoys reputations as "the most beautiful peak of Guye (a mountain range in Shanxi province)" and "the No 1 scenic area in the He-Fen Area". As a valuable natural gene treasury and a birthplace of many national-level rare species, it boasts more than 2700 species of plants and animals and various rare old trees and herbs. With an excellent ecological environment and a high forest coverage rate of 89 percent, the Mount Yun Scenic Area is also a good place for people to alleviate fatigue.
