China has virtually eliminated classes that accommodate more than 66 students in primary and middle schools nationwide, with the proportion of such "super-sized" classes falling to 0.24 percent by the end of 2019, according to the Ministry of Education.

Meanwhile, the proportion of "large" classes with over 56 students had dropped to 3.98 percent by the end of 2019, down 10.1 percentage points from 2015, the data showed.

Oversized classes have long been a prominent issue in China's compulsory education system, as quality education resources are insufficient in some regions.

China has stepped up efforts to improve conditions in its 309,000 schools providing compulsory education. The proportion of primary schools, junior middle schools, and senior high schools with access to the internet reached 98.43 percent, 99.07 percent, and 98.67 percent, respectively, at the end of last year, according to the ministry.
